History
Reggae originated in Jamaica back in the middle of the 20th century. It arose from the blending of the traditional Afro-Caribbean musical forms ska and mento with American R&B (rhythm and blues), and it has a rich timeline and history. In the 1960s it began to evolve and spread as a distinct genre, mainly credited to the efforts of its foremost and highly popular exponent, Bob Marley.
Several factors have greatly influenced the outcome that is reggae music. Other styles of music brought innovations and influences through the years that affected reggae. Some attempts were made at making it cross over with similar syncopated styles such as certain brands of South American music. Others lent its rhythm to traditional jazz. As a result, present-day reggae is in effect a kind of umbrella genre encompassing a considerable variety of hybrid reggae styles. Consequently, the music recording industry, in wealthy countries at least, has successfully made reggae music a major vehicle for making a fortune for new and established artists.
